Ask Eddie – Leftover Cooking Oil

Dear Ask Eddie,

I have heard that it is really not a good idea to pour leftover cooking oil in the drain, but is my only other option is to dump it in the trash?

Please let me know if there is something else I can do with it to reuse it–if that is possible.

Thanks!

Sincerely,

Cindy P.

Dear Cindy,

First of all I want to say you are correct in stating that you shouldn’t pour the oil down your drain because the oil really clogs the drain and then you have more issues.

To correctly answer your question, it depends on what kind of oil you are using. If the oil was used to cook fish, then you really shouldn’t reuse this oil and it is best to place the leftover oil in a plastic container in place it in the trash.

On the other hand if you are talking about oil from cooking chicken or pork, then you can reuse this oil by following these steps:

1) Allow the oil to cool before proceeding.

2) Grab a large bowl to hold the oil.

3) Take a coffee filter and place it in a plastic or metal colander.

4) Place the colander over a large container.

5) Pour the oil into the filter and drain the oil into the new bowl or container.

And voila – you have oil you can reuse for the next time you make fried chicken or pork.  Enjoy.

Cindy, thank you for your question.

Sincerely,

Eddie
